Falling in love with the smallest, loneliest and slightly conceited member of the symphony orchest; it happened to Dutch flutist Ilonka Kolthof, who was left no other choice than to devote her musical career to the piccolo. A versatile, dynamic and passionate flute and piccolo player, Kolthof is internationally acclaimed for her lyrical playing, dazzling virtuosity and magnetic stage presence. Much sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist, Kolthof has garnered special attention for her commitment to the music of our time.
Dutch Piccolo Project
As a tireless promoter of the piccolo, Kolthof initiated the Dutch Piccolo Project, with the aim to highlight and actively promote the piccolo as an autonomous solo instrument. It has so far resulted into many successful collaborations with Dutch composers, amongst them JacobTV (Jacob ter Veldhuis), Mathilde Wantenaar, Jan Vriend, Vanessa Lann, Bart Spaan, Jan-Peter de Graaff, Allan Segall, Ned McGowan, Claudia Rumondor, Willem Boogman and Piet-Jan van Rossum. It has also prompted collaboration with internationally acclaimed musicians and drawn considerable attention from the media.
As a soloist, Kolthof has performed across the U.S. and Europe, including a solo recital at the National Flute Association's Convention in San Diego (CA). Additionally she performed at international music festivals such as the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam, Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, November Music, Classical Encounters and the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht. Kolthof also played at renowned concert venues in Europe such as the Musicverein Vienna, De Geerhallen Norrköping, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, TivoliVredenburg and De Doelen Rotterdam.
Kolthof is also in great demand as an orchestral musician. As such she is a regular guest player with Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (NL), Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (NL), The Hague Philharmonic (NL), Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra (NL), North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra (NL), Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (BE), Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (BE), Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (SE).
Fast developing an international career as a versatile flute player, and in particular as a specialist on the piccolo, Kolthof won Second Prize at the 2017 ‘Walfrid Kujala International Piccolo Competition’. She also won Third Prize at the 2014 ‘NFA Piccolo Artist Competition’ in Chicago (IL) and was finalist in the ‘Concours d'Interprétation de la Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt’ (Paris, 2013). Already early on during her studies Kolthof won first prizes in Dutch competitions including Princess Christina Competition, Benelux Flute Competition and Young Musical Talent Competition.
Kolthof holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree from the Conservatory of Amsterdam (NL), studying the flute with Abbie de Quant and Harrie Starreveld. In 2015 she obtained a Master of Music degree in piccolo performance from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (BE), where she studied with Peter Verhoyen and graduated with honors.
