‘‘Kolthof whispers impressively with the piccolo’’ (De Volkskrant)
Falling in love with the smallest, loneliest and slightly conceited member of the symphony orchestra… It happened to Dutch flutist Ilonka Kolthof, who was left no other choice than to devote her musical career to the piccolo. A versatile, dynamic and passionate flute and piccolo player, Kolthof is internationally acclaimed for her lyrical playing, dazzling virtuosity and magnetic stage presence.
Much sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist, Kolthof has garnered special attention for her commitment to the music of our time.
A tireless promoter of the piccolo, Kolthof initiated the Dutch Piccolo Project with the aim to actively raise the status of the piccolo to the level of an autonomous solo instrument. It has so far resulted into many succesful collaborations with some of the most leading composers in The Netherlands, amongst them Mathilde Wantenaar, Jacob ter Veldhuis, Bart Spaan and Jan Vriend. It has also prompted collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians and drawn considerable attention from the media.
